Frederick George May, resident of Millis for more than 65 years passed on June 28, 2024 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Norwood after a brief illness.
Fred was born in Boston on November 3, 1933, and graduated from Boston Trade High School after completing a program on radio station operation. He served in the US Navy as an instructor in radio and electronics and was based in Boston.
In 1955 he married Margaret Ann Tower of Boston. After completing his service in the Navy, Fred & Margaret moved to upstate New York where he worked on radio communication research for the federal government. They returned to the Boston area in 1957 and purchased a home in Millis with a recently born son Carl James in tow. Over the next three years the May family added two more children; Donald Walter in 1958 and Lydia Jean in 1959.
Fred began a long career in research and development at Texas Instruments in Attleboro, MA where he remained for the balance of his career. He retired in the mid 1990’s and pursued many hobbies over the next 30 years. One of his greatest passions was reading of all kinds; from novels to technical manuals which he used to become well versed in hundreds of subjects.
In 2019 somewhat failing health required that Margaret & Fred leave their beloved home in Millis and move to assisted living in Franklin and later Norwood.
Fred was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Millis for more than 30 years serving on several occasions as Senior Warden. He later attended St Michael’s Episcopal Church in Holliston.
Fred was preceded in passing by his wife Margaret who passed in May 2023. He is survived by his sister Dorothy Butler of Plymouth, MA and by his children – Carl May and wife Barbara of Oklahoma; Donald May and wife Kathy of Milford, MA; Lydia May and longtime companion Edward Kaiser of Norfolk, MA. He also leaves two beloved Grandchildren – Christian May of Ann Arbor, Michigan and Lyntessa May of Millis, MA.
A memorial service will be held on September 28, 2024, at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church on Highland Street in Holliston MA at 11 am.
