Obituary

Of Boston formerly of West Roxbury, in her 92nd year, Joanne passed peacefully at home on September 1st after a brief decline in her health. Beloved daughter of the late John and Alice Callahan of West Roxbury and Scituate, and late brother John “Jackie” Callahan.

Dearest Sister of Marie Altmeyer of Rye, NY. and James Callahan (Marcia) of Canton, Ma. Cherished “Aunt Dody” of nephews Paul (Lorraine) Altmeyer of Norfolk, Ma., Jay Altmeyer of Rye, NY., Doug Altmeyer of Napa, CA., Andrew Callahan (Katherine) of Wellesley, Ma., and niece Jill Callahan Close (Brian) of Victor, ID.

Joanne adored, and was adored by, her grand nieces and nephews, Lauren and Kristen, Patrick and Elizabeth, James, Bronwyn and Isabel and the youngest Patrick and Caroline.

Throughout her long life, Joanne has maintained so many special and loving relationships with countless devoted friends and extended family.
Joanne’s life was full of adventure as an avid world traveler with dear friends and yes, even rejuvenated her skiing skills as a “senior” with many family trips to Vermont and New Hampshire!

After spending a career in the travel and hospitality industries, Joanne spent several years working for The City of Boston, both as administrative assistant to then Mayor Tom Menino and concluding in the city’s Parks Department. After retiring, she carried on her long career of volunteerism at both Mass General Hospital, being recognized for her long service and dedication, and until recently supporting and visiting Boston Health Care for the Homeless shelter.

In closing, it’s clear Joanne’s quick-witted humor, fierce determination and generous spirit have lovingly touched so many over a lifetime well-lived. She was so loved and will always remain in our hearts…
