Carl John Olivo, a longtime resident of Franklin, passed away on Sunday, September 1, surrounded by those he loved, following a courageous 10-month battle with glioblastoma.
His unwavering faith in God and the loving prayers and support of family, friends, and the community carried him with grace and grit through his intense medical journey. He faced his diagnosis and treatment with undeniable courage and strength, never once complaining throughout the entire difficult process that he had to endure.
Born and raised in Newton, Carl was the second of six children born to Dominic and Gloria Olivo. After graduating from Newton North High School, he served in the Army National Guard and then joined the Newton Police Department. He furthered his career as a police officer for Conrail Railroad, with a specialty in K9 patrol, and then Amtrak, where he retired after 20+ years of service. Carl enjoyed his time as a police officer, always helping others. Beyond his commitment to “protect and serve”, Carl managed a successful plow business, Lawrence Miles, for over 30 years.
Enjoying the ocean with family and friends was Carl’s true passion. He was a spirited boater and member of the Watertown Yacht Club for the past 30+ years, serving as a proud Commodore for a period of time. There, he and his family formed lifelong friendships and enjoyed many social events and trips over the years. When the family wasn’t out on the boat, they could be found enjoying the ocean at their Cape house in Wareham, where they loved to entertain and where many treasured family memories were made.
As mentioned, Carl came from a large, loving Italian family. The Olivo gatherings were always filled with love, laughter, loudness, and LOTS of food. Carl will be deeply missed at these family gatherings, where the laughter was endless and there was always ongoing debate and jabs about who made the greatest dish (they all inherited their mother’s impressive culinary skills).
Carl is survived and missed by his loving wife of 31 years, (Elizabeth) Lisa Olivo, and his four children: Carl Jr., Patrick, Lauren, and Tyler. He viewed his children as his greatest accomplishment. They gave him strength during the rough times, and laughter and joy all of the time. He was immensely proud of their character and achievements, and will forever be watching over and guiding them throughout their lives.
He also leaves behind his cherished siblings; Janet and her husband George Childs of Holliston, Steven Olivo and his wife Dorian of Foxboro, Michael Olivo and his wife Judy of Bellingham; Joe Olivo of Franklin; and Alan Olivo and his wife Diane of Salem, NH. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. He is predeceased by his parents, Dominic and Gloria Olivo.
According to author Raymond Carver, the meaning of life “is to feel yourself beloved on this earth”. Therefore, Carl had the richest life ever. Friends and family loved Carl unconditionally, and he loved fiercely as well. We will miss and love him forever.
In addition to his pride in serving his country, Carl also took pride in being a member of The Knights of Columbus, ELKS, and American Legion.
The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support in many heart-felt forms. It will never be forgotten. We also wish to acknowledge the exceptional care at Dana Farber and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in addition to the endless support from the angels at Hope Hospice.
Friends and family are invited to attend calling hours at the Charles F. Oteri and Son Funeral Home at 33 Cottage St, Franklin, MA on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at noon, at St. Mary’s Church, 1 Church Square, Franklin, MA. Burial with military honors will follow at Glenwood Cemetery, South Natick, MA.
