Obituary

Steven Luongo, a lifetime resident of Medford, died peacefully in his sleep on August 29th. He was 62 years old. Steven was born in Somerville, Massachusetts, the son of Richard Luongo and Helen Lutek Luongo.

Steven, affectionately known as “Munga” to all his lifelong friends, held various jobs throughout his life, most recently at a car wash in Hampton, New Hampshire. At an early age, Steven developed an interest in gambling, which later became one of his favorite pastimes. He loved playing Whist at the Saccos on Saturday afternoons, betting the dogs at Wonderland and the horses at Suffolk, and celebrating his wins and losses with all of his friends. Steven loved riding his bike to Hampton Beach, listening to Motown music, bopping in and out of the casino to play Keno and eating Christie’s Pizza. In recent years, he finally admitted that he liked country music and had a great time at several concerts with his family.

Steven was a talker; he loved talking on the phone and somehow managed to memorize every number he ever dialed. He called certain people every day, multiple times a day – keeping in touch was so important to him, and we will all miss hearing his voice on the other line. Steven had a big smile, and sometimes a devilish grin. He loved to laugh out loud and make others laugh with him, especially at his corny jokes. He had an even bigger heart and loved his family and friends more than they will ever know. He will be truly missed by all.

Steven leaves behind his loving sons, Johnny and Anthony and his daughter-in-law Tiffany. He was so very proud of all of them and enjoyed every moment they spent together. He will be forever loved and missed by his cherished best friend Mary Luongo, who is still and always will be known as Steven’s wife. He is survived by his dear brother Butchy and sister-in-law Ginny, who helped him a great deal over the past few years. He was predeceased by his sister Annette, who he affectionately and relentlessly teased. He was the loving godfather to Jaclyn, a caring uncle to Lauren, Lindsey and Theo, and a great uncle “Gus” to Sophia. He also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear lifelong friends.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to visit with Steven’s family at the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St, Medford on Tuesday, September 3rd from 10 AM to 12 PM followed by a funeral service at 12 PM. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Steven’s name to the Beth Israel Lahey Hospital, Liver Transplant Department, 41 Mall Rd., Burlington, MA 01805.
