LOIS (RAINEY) SMITH OBITUARY

Lois E. (Rainey) Smith, 86, of Commodore, PA went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 at Embassy of Hillsdale Park.

The daughter of Joseph and Marie (Conner) Rainey, she was born on March 17, 1938 in Wilgus, PA.

In 1956 Lois graduated from Purchase Line High School. On Christmas Day 1959 she married Doyle Smith.

A woman of deep faith, Lois attended the Purchase Line Church of the Brethren.

For twenty-seven years Lois was employed as a cook at the Purchase Line High School. In 1962 Lois and her husband Doyle opened Smith’s Sales and Service. Their used car lot was instrumental in building many friendships over sixty-two years. She valued the many customers.

Lois loved to cook and bake. She made sure to have a cake or some dessert ready for visitors. Many friends and family often gathered at her kitchen table for a snack, a meal or a cup of tea. Lois loved holidays and reunions and spent days preparing.

Kind, compassionate and loving, Lois was always thinking of the needs and dreams of others. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family.

Lois fought dementia for over ten years. Even as the disease progressed, Lois loved singing, then humming and then listening to Christian hymns. These hymns gave her true peace. The strong faith and love of God that Lois taught her children and grandchildren carried her through every day and ultimately to her eternal home.

Her memory is cherished by her husband of almost sixty-five years, Doyle, of Commodore, PA; children: Brenda (Roger) Irwin of Home, PA and Kevin (Lee) Smith of Commodore, PA; her grandchildren: Carissa (Robert Doremus) Irwin of Juneau, Alaska; Missy Irwin of Home, PA; Sarah (fiancé, Roman Tate) Smith of Pittsburgh, PA and Ben Smith, Faith Smith and Bethany Smith, all of Commodore, PA.

Also surviving are her brother, Richard (Carol) Rainey of Penn Run, PA; three sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Rainey of Ebensburg, PA; Jeanie Rainey of Glen Moore, PA and Jeanne Rainey of Lexington, SC; brother-in-law, Charlie Lohr of Johnstown, PA and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Alvassa Hopkins and Eileen Lohr and five brothers: James, Charles, Ben, Don and Bernon Rainey.

Family and friends will be received from 2-4:00 and 6-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 5, 2024 at the Rairigh Funeral Home, Ltd, in Hillsdale, PA, where an 11:00 a.m. funeral service will be held on Friday, September 6, 2024 with Lois’s niece, Pastor Jackie Greene officiating. Interment will follow at the Rowley Cemetery in Hillsdale, PA.
