It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved brother Gerard O’Neill of Dorchester, Massachusetts. Gerard passed away at age 57 on Sunday, August 25th with loving family members by his side.
‘Curly’, as he was fondly called by family and friends, was born in 1967 in County Galway, Ireland to Valie and Peggy O’Neill (deceased) and grew up in the village of Aillebrack in Ballyconneely, County Galway. He is survived by his daughter, Colleen, his nine living siblings, numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends.
From a very young age, Gerard learned carpentry skills working alongside his father in Ireland. In his youth, he also played Gaelic football and rugby. At the age of 19, he moved to the Boston area and spent decades as a carpenter. Among so many other things, he will be remembered for excellent craftsmanship and his strong work ethic. When he did take time off from work, he enjoyed traveling, the beach, scuba diving and a bit of golf.
Gerard’s family, along with his very dear friends Mandana and Kian, would like to thank all the nurses, doctors and other staff members at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, especially those in Units 4A and 3B, who cared for Gerard with such warmth and kindness over these past two months. Their diligence and compassion made his situation a little bit less unbearable.
We are eternally grateful for the time shared with each other and the lessons learned from Gerard. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Rest in peace, Gerard. You will always be in our hearts and memories.
To honor and remember Gerard, his family encourages you to contact someone you haven’t seen recently or have lost touch with over the years. Ask them how they're doing and meet up for a walk, for dinner, or to split a pitcher of Modelo.
Visiting hours in the William J. Gormley Funeral Home, 2055 Centre St., West Roxbury on Thursday, August 29th, 2024, from 4 to 8 pm. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
Funeral Services will take place in Ballyconneely, County Galway. Gerard will be buried there with his parents and his brother.
