W. A. Carver, 82, of Wray, Georgia, died Tuesday morning, August 13, 2024, at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, following a lengthy illness.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Friday, August 16, 2024, at Satilla Baptist Church in Irwin County, Georgia, with the Rev. William Pope, Rev. Craig Barnette and Brother Dion Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening, from 6 PM until 8 PM. at the funeral home in Ocilla.
Mr. Carver was born June 12, 1942, in Douglas, Georgia, to the late Elmer “Buddy” & Mary Lee Story Carver. Mr. Carver attended school in Coffee County and graduated from Coffee County High School where he played basketball and baseball. He received a basketball and baseball scholarship and played at Valdosta State University. He worked at Delphi in Fitzgerald.
Mr. Carver was a loving husband, father and Papa. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved sports and was very competitive and strived to be the best in basketball, baseball and golf. He also loved to quail hunt. He was a member of Satilla Baptist Church.
He is survived by his daughters: Loye & Rev. William Pope of Douglas and Beverly & James Griffin of Wray; a son, W.A., Jr. & Susan Carver of Douglas; four grandsons: Casey Pope, Cole Carver, Cane Carver and Wade Sumner; great-grandchild, Walker Pope; a brother, Billy & Cathy Carver of Ambrose; sister-in-law, Marilyn & George Cook of Ocilla and sister-in-law, Brenda Carver. Several nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the love of his life, Amelia Vickers Carver; a grandson, Cody Pope; two sisters: Earnell Carver and Vernell Williams and a brother, T.J. Carver.
