Bette Luane (Broberg) Maier - of South Wellfleet, MA (formerly of Somers, CT) died August 8th surrounded by her four loving children. She was the beloved wife of 46 years to the late Dr. Robert F. Maier.
Born in Worcester in 1941, Bette was the daughter of the late Charles F. and Linnea (Wahlstrom) Broberg. She was a graduate of the UMass School of Nursing (BS/RN) and worked as a Registered Nurse at the Springfield, MA VNA. Bette was compassionate, always seeking to help others. She served for 20+ years with Board Director involvement at the Springfield VNA, was a Cofounder of the Somers Cooperative Preschool Association, and was a volunteer and Board Member for 10+ years at the Wellfleet Food Pantry.
Bette’s greatest joy in life was her family. She is survived and will be deeply missed by her children, Cheryl and her husband John Walsh of Wellfleet, Valerie Bowman of St. Pete Beach, FL, Robert Maier and his wife Margaret of Scituate, and Heidi and her husband Steven Wall of Woburn. Bette will be loved and cherished forever as “Mimi” by her nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Bette was bold, kind, had an infectious laugh and unmatchable sense of humor, and she was always seeking the next adventure. Bette loved skiing and served for 16 years as a member of the National Ski Patrol at Blandford Ski Area, with EMT status. A lover of Frank Sinatra, she truly “lived a life that’s full” and “traveled each and every highway.” Bette had a passion for exploration, photography, and nature, traveling to six out of seven continents of the world, including a safari in Africa and a voyage to Antarctica. Although Bette was a global traveler, her favorite place to be was by the sea. Her heart belonged to the ocean and the beaches of Cape Cod.
A private family ceremony will be held in Wellfleet. Bette will be interred at the West Cemetery in Somers. Relatives and friends will be invited to a Celebration of Life for Bette in Somers, CT at a future date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bette’s memory to the Wellfleet Food Pantry, at 25 Lieutenant Island Rd, PO Box 425, South Wellfleet, MA 02663.
