John T. Anderson of Worcester, Massachusetts passed away on July 13, 2024. John was Professor Emeritus of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the College of the Holy Cross. He served as a class dean for two graduating classes, 2015 and 2020. An alumnus of Princeton University, he earned his PhD in mathematics from Brown University in 1986 and taught at Holy Cross from 1986 until his retirement due to illness in 2023. He earned tenure and promotion to associate professor in 1993 and promotion to professor in 2001.
John was a prolific scholar and dedicated teacher who mentored countless students over his long career. He had boundless curiosity about nature, history, literature, philosophy, and science, and maintained an extensive book collection. An avid runner and cyclist, he loved the outdoors, and was particularly fond of hiking, fishing, and gardening.
He is survived by three sons David (Ken), Eric (Lauren), and Michael (Tina), whom he shared with his former wife and friend Laurie. John leaves his loving sisters Sarah and Kathe, and five grandchildren: Charlotte, Kayla, Ashley, Michael, and Benjamin. He is preceded in death by his sister, Susan, and parents, Carl and Kathryn.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The American Cancer Society or Mass Audubon. Funeral arrangements are private. A celebration of his life will be held in late August.
