Obituary

Charlene Sweeney, a cherished fixture of Charlestown, passed away suddenly at the age of 76. A proud, lifetime resident of Charlestown, Charlene was deeply rooted in her community, and affectionately known as a true “Townie.”

Born to Charles and Elizabeth Carvell, Charlene grew up surrounded by the love of her siblings, including her late sister Francis Roberts and her surviving brothers Donald Carvell and James Carvell. She attended Charlestown High School and embarked on a life filled with devotion to her family and community.

Charlene married Richie Getchell early in her life. She later married her true life partner, Gene Sweeney and together they raised a large and loving family. Charlene’s legacy lives on through her five children: Jere Getchell, Eric Getchell and his partner Rebecca Deacon, Kurt Getchell and his wife Jen, Mary Sweeney and her partner David Guerrera, and Sheila Alarcon and her husband Breyner Alarcon.

She was a proud grandmother to 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren including Michael, Terry, Shana, Nicole, Kelsey, Frankie, Sara, Robert, Dylan, Max, Carter, Geno, Anthony, Mia, Alexis, Ava, Breyla, Luna, Jaylynn and Antonio.

For over three decades, Charlene was the heart and soul of her salon on Main Street, where she excelled as a hair stylist and built lasting relationships with countless residents. Her presence in the salon was a testament to her dedication to the community and her passion for her work.

In her last few working years, Charlene enjoyed a fulfilling experience as a bus driver for the MBTA. Her time there allowed her to forge lasting friendships with colleagues and commuters alike.

Charlene had a deep passion for travel and music. She delighted in exploring new destinations and found immense joy in attending concerts and making friends around the world.

In the past four years, Charlene embraced a new chapter by relocating to South Carolina. There, she found happiness and solace in a vibrant Bible study community, where she built deep and meaningful friendships. Her faith and commitment to this group provided her with great comfort and a renewed sense of purpose in her later years.

Charlene will be remembered for her beauty, warm smile, her unwavering love for her family, and her tireless spirit. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and commitment to those she cherished.

Charlene’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew her, and she will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and community.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Charlene's Funeral Service on Saturday morning, August 10, 2024, at 10:30 A.M. in The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown. Her burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett. Her visiting hours will be on Friday, August 9, 2024, from 4 to 7 P.M. in the funeral home.
