Helen A. (Sophios) Gogolos, a lifelong resident of Medford and beloved wife of the late Steve J. Gogolos, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Danvers on Saturday afternoon, August 3, 2024. She was 92 years old.
Born in Medford, Massachusetts, on September 4, 1931, she was the beloved daughter of the late Agamemnon and Matina (Combis) Sophios. Helen was a graduate of the Medford Public School system and Garland Junior College.
She was employed for over 50 years as a Lunch Mother at the Wait, Gleason and Brooks schools in Medford. In her spare time, Helen enjoyed sewing, knitting beautiful Christmas stockings for family members, making puzzles, watching Days of Our Lives and Family Feud, and entertaining at her home in Medford. She also loved to cook and bake, especially delicious Greek foods and pastries. For many years, she was a Cub Scout Den Mother and a Sunday School teacher at the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Somerville, as well a supporter/volunteer for the Christian Angel Smile Foundation. Helen enjoyed being an ear to so many friends and family members who confided in her. She will be dearly missed by everyone whose lives she touched.
Helen is survived by her loving children John and his wife Patricia Gogolos of Newburyport, James Gogolos of Medford, and Tina and her husband James Ghikas of Danvers, grandchildren; Christopher Gogolos and his wife Greer of Merrimac and Katrina Mason and her husband Seth of West Newbury and great-granddaughter Sophie Gogolos. She was also the sister of the late Zoe Cameles and like a sister to the late Nicholas Gavrelis of Medford, the late George Gavrelis of Maryland, and Laura Blomquist of Maryland.
Visiting hours will be held in the Beals-Geake-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 29 Governors Avenue, Medford on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, from 4 to 8 PM. Relatives and friends are most welcome to attend.
