John D. Hughes of Medford passed away peacefully with his wife by his side on July 27, 2024 at the age of 62. John was born in Malden in 1961, was raised in Burlington and graduated from Burlington High School.
At a young age, John developed a strong work ethic while working at his family's sub-shop "Santoro's" alongside his grand-parents, mother and brother. Later in his life he eventually joined Roofers & Waterproofers Union Local 33. He was a man who dedicated his life to his work. He was a foreman who earned the respect of his peers and his bosses.
He enjoyed playing multiple sports, fishing and was a dedicated New England sports fan.
After losing his younger brother (his best friend), Scott (age 44) in 2013, he was never the same. But, he had so many friends that stood by his side. He appreciated and enjoyed those friendships.
He was known as "The Big Guy" with the nice smile and great laugh. Although he was a man of few words. People knew to listen when he spoke. He always enjoyed spending time with his friends, sharing stories and jokes, helping out when needed, and learning from their experiences. He was a loyal and generous friend. He would go on and on to his wife about all of his friends from when he was growing up and the crazy things that they did together. He looked back fondly on those experiences and relationships.
He is survived by his beloved wife Susan M. Hughes, mother Marilyn M. Hughes of Burlington, son John J. Hughes and his wife Felicia of Derry, NH, daughter Kerri A. Hughes of Beverly, son
Derek T. Hughes of Lynn, daughter-in-law Suzanne Hughes and grandchildren, Alicia Hughes, and John Hughes of Billerica. Also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
