Scarborough—Maurice (Mo) Mallett Jr, age 82
Mo passed away surrounded by family on July 26, 2024, at the Maine Veterans Home after his battle with dementia.
Born in Brunswick, Maine, he was the son of the late Maurice and Mildred (Smith) Mallett.
Mo attended Sacred Heart School through 8th grade and Deering High until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1959.
While serving on the U.S.S. Lake Champlain (VCS-39) with the U.S. Navy, Mo grew into the man we all knew and loved. Mo came out of the U.S. Navy with a deep commitment to service.
His incredible dedication and love of work was demonstrated at the three jobs he held after serving with the U.S. Navy. At H.P. Hoods Ice Cream, he started as a driver and quickly worked through the ranks to become the Ice Cream Plant Manager in Portland. When the company relocated to Massachusetts, Mo made a choice to take a sales manager position at DownEast Energy so he could continue raising his four daughters in Maine. After many successful years, he moved to Irving Oil as Commercial Sales Manager; he would ultimately retire there.
He was respected not only by his co-workers, but by the entire community. He thrived in sales—people were his passion, and he strived to remember everyone. Even though he struggled with dementia later in life, these experiences would always remain with him.
Mo took pride in caring for his family, including those with paws. He had a deep and abiding love of animals. There were always animals in his home.
His hobbies included golfing, candlepin bowling, cribbage, and playing poker. He was a member of Purpoodock Club for many years and enjoyed hosting his family there every year for Easter brunch.
Mo is survived by: his daughters Michelle Pelletier, Melissa Lundgren, Maria Viola, and Micole Dunning; his grandchildren Megan Lundgren, Morgan Lundgren, Michael Viola, Samantha Pollard, Zachary Viola, Dominic Cushing, Richard Dunning Jr., and Autumn Dunning; his great-grandchildren Rowen Viola, Cameron Viola, and Enzo Pollard; his sister Maureen Hasson; his nieces Susan Hasson, and Katherine Hasson; and longtime companion, Deborah Wright.
The family would like to thank the B Unit staff at the Maine Veterans Home for caring for Mo and providing a warm and welcoming community for his final 8 months.
A graveside service will be held at Calvary Cemetery (1461 Broadway, South Portland) on August 15th at 10am.
Celebration of life will follow at Coopersmith Tavern, 671 Main Street, South Portland, Maine 04106.
