LIMINGTON - Charles “Charlie” Huntress, age 82, passed away on July 21, 2024, at River Ridge Center in Kennebunk, Maine.
He was born in Portland, Maine on October 7, 1941, a son of the late Dr. Roderick and Bertha (Haggett) Huntress. As a boy, Charlie excelled at pitching for his baseball team and playing the trumpet.
After graduating from South Portland High School in 1959, Charlie went on to attend Boston University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Economics in 1963.
After graduating from BU, Charlie accepted a job as a Commercial Property Underwriter with Liberty Mutual Insurance Company and moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was there that he met his wife Gemma. They were married on April 6, 1968.
Charlie and Gemma moved back to South Portland, Maine in 1970. For the next 35 years, Charlie held various commercial underwriting and executive positions at insurance companies, including Maine Bonding & Casualty, York Mutual, Commercial Union, and One Beacon Insurance. He also owned an independent insurance agency.
Over the years, Charlie served as Chair of the MSAD 6 School Board, President of the Maine Rose Society, and a Town of Limington Selectman.
Charlie loved animals, and enjoyed growing roses, collecting antiques, listening to jazz and classical music, and discussing his grandchildren’s many activities.
He is predeceased by a son - Keith Huntress, who passed away in 1981, and a brother - Roderick Huntress, Jr., who passed away in 2015.
Charlie is survived by his wife - Gemma (Bravo) Huntress; his daughter - Laura (Huntress) Fucarile and her husband Bryan, of Nashua, New Hampshire; sister - Lois Huntress of Assonet, Massachusetts; grandchildren Giuliana and Jackson; and many nieces and nephews.
A private burial will be held at a later date.
