George Washington Moore, 81, of Tifton passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, September 22, 2002, following a lengthy illness. His funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 25, 2002, at Tifton's First United Methodist Church the with Rev. Willie Beasley, the Rev. Jay Roberson and the rev. Ronnie Lawson officiating. Mr. Moore was laid to rest at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Mr. Moore's nephews, Frank Ross, Sonny Ross, Ray Talbird, Al Talbird, Marty Moore and Darrell Moore served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were the members of the Loyalty Sunday School Class at Tifton's First United Methodist Church and Mr. Moore's nephews, Ronnie Baker, Russ Moore and Phil Moore.
Born March 27, 1921, in Tift County, Mr. Moore was the son of the late James Washington Moore and Azalee Chaffin Moore. He was also preceded in death by eight siblings. He was a graduate of Tift County Hight School; and he spent his entire career with Gulf Oil Corporation as an industrial engineer in Macon. After his retirement in 1989, he and his wife returned to live in Tifton. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the United States Army. He was a very loving, kind and generous husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew him and loved him.
Mr. Moore was a faithful member of Tifton's First United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Loyalty Sunday School Class. he served several years as a delegate to the General Conference as well as on the Administrative Board. In Macon, he served on the Administrative Board and the Board of Trustees at Riverside United Methodist Church.
Mr. Moore is survived by his wife of 61 years, Madge Ross Moore of Tifton; one son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Avan Moore of Tifton; one granddaughter, Haviland Moore of Mount Sterling, Illinois; three grandsons, Robert McCormick of New York, New York and Charlie McCormich and Thomas McCormick, both of Tifton; one sister, Ruth Baker of Tifton; one brother and sister-in-law, Marvin and Ann Moore of Tifton; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
