Obituary


Portland and Madawaska, Maine – Lucien Reginald Deschaine, age 71, left us peacefully on July 21, 2024, after a lengthy battle with heart disease. Lucien was born on November 28, 1952, in Edmundston, NB, Canada, a son of Anne (Fournier) Deschaine and the late Reginald Deschaine, he was raised in Madawaska, Maine. Following graduation from Madawaska High School, Class of 1972, Lucien enlisted in the United States Air Force and later graduated from the University of Maine at Fort Kent with a bachelor’s degree. Lucien worked at the local paper mill after his military service, now known as Twin River Paper Mill. He forged his path defending labor issues, working for the United Steelworkers Union as a fierce defender of labor rights, labor contract negotiations, and worker protections. Lucien is survived by his two daughters, Renee and Andrea Deschaine, his mother Anne Deschaine, his two sisters Doris-Mai Caldwell, Rejeanne Martin, his brother Lionel Deschaine and several nieces and nephews. Lucien is predeceased by his father, Reginald Deschaine, his wife Carol (Poulin) Deschaine, his father, and two brothers, Ghislain and Marcel Deschaine. A private memorial will be celebrated at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, 217 Landing Road, Westbrook, Maine 04092 in memory of his beloved cat Freedo.
