It is with great sadness that the family of Kurt R. Mertsch announce his unexpected passing on Saturday, July 13 at 58 years of age. He was the devoted husband of Deborah L. (Borden) Mertsch.
Born in Salem and raised in Peabody, he was the son of late Ruth E. Pelletier and Hans Mertsch. After graduating from Peabody High School in 1983, Kurt enlisted in the United States Navy from 1983-1989. Following his tour with the Navy, he enlisted in the United States Army in 1989 and honorably served during the Persian Gulf War. He was honorably discharged under the rank of Sergeant in 1994.
Kurt was currently employed by KEOLIS as a track foreman. Kurt was always known as a hard worker and a committed family man with a dry sense of humor. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, gardening and camping. He loved spending time with his granddaughter and was very excited to welcome his grandson this coming fall.
In addition to his wife Deborah, he is survived by his son Stephen Mertsch of Salem, his daughter Ashley Mertsch and partner Cecilio Guante of Peabody, his beloved granddaughter Genevieve Mertsch, His siblings, Hans Mertsch and wife Judith of Salem, Roland Mertsch, Marc Pelletier, and Heidi Ingemi all of New Hampshire, Doreen Penoli and husband Alan of California. He was predeceased by his daughter Allyssa Mertsch.
Services will be held at Levesque Funeral Home, 163 Lafayette St, Salem, MA 01970 on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM with his funeral service to begin at 12:45.
