PITTSFIELD – Daniel H. "Mick" Bigelow Sr., 92, of Pittsfield and a longtime resident of Fordham Street in East Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, July 10, 2024. He passed into Eternal Life at Hillcrest Commons Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Pittsfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Pittsfield on March 20, 1932, a beloved son of the late Leo and Louise (Grandshaw) Bigelow. He was raised in Pittsfield, graduated from Pittsfield High School, Class of 1950, and lived in East Springfield for many years before returning to Pittsfield in 2017 where he lived the remainder of his life. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and attained the rank of Sergeant First Class. He received the Korean Service Medal with One Bronze Service Star, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Combat Commendation Ribbon, and the Presidential Unit Citation. He was a Supervisor at Ludlow Textile Company and retired in 2006. After his retirement, he worked in the sorting room for the United States Postal Service at the Bulk Mail Center in Indian Orchard. Dan enjoyed tinkering around home, especially working on motors and machinery. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends. He was predeceased by his late wife, Carolina H. (Sintra) Martins Bigelow who was Called Home on April 18, 2014; and his seven dear siblings, Conrad, Louis, Arthur, Richard, Margaret, Salinda, and Louise. He leaves his former wife, Mildred F. (Dellea) Eichstedt of Southfield; their four loving and devoted children, Daniel H. Bigelow Jr. and his wife, Merry, of Palm Bay, FL, Donna M. Bigelow Trapp and her husband, Ralph Trapp, of Pittsfield, Debra J. Richard of Southfield, and Deana R. Drobish of Rockaway, NJ; his eight cherished grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; his dear sister, Veronica Martin of Pittsfield; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family members and friends. His relatives and friends are invited to attend his Committal Service with United States Army Military Honors on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at 3 p.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. There are no visiting hours. His funeral arrangements are entrusted to the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107.
