Obituary

Laszlo (Les) Landstein was born September 30, 1936, and passed away July 9, 2024. He was born in Budapest, Hungary to Olga and Miklos Landstein. He was among the few of his family who survived the Holocaust. After escaping from Communist Hungary and moving to the United States, Les obtained his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Toledo and his master's degree in aeronautical and mechanical engineering from Columbia University. He joined Grumman Aircraft after graduating and was on the team that designed the landing gear for the lunar lander. The rest of his career, he worked on mainframe processor design at IBM. Les married the love of his life, Julie, 61 years ago and moved to Ossining, NY prior to the arrival of their first child, Rob and soon to be followed by Lisa. Les is survived by his wife Julie, sister Katherine Landstein, daughter Lisa Landstein, son Rob, daughter-in-law Jennifer, and his three grandchildren Jack, Adam, and Olivia. Les was known to family and friends as kind, loving and generous with his time. He was a Flotilla Commander in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, enjoyed boating and painting in his younger years and was a man committed to family. He will be missed greatly by those who had the opportunity to enjoy his sense of humor and his expressive way of communicating, especially in Hungarian. He was a joy to be around and enriched the lives of many.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Laszlo Landstein to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council (inspiring citizens and leaders worldwide to confront hatred, prevent genocide, and promote human dignity: www.ushmm.org) or Hillel International (a nonprofit working hard to ensure that our Jewish students get the support, comfort, and care they need: www.hillel.org).

The funeral and service will take place Friday, July 12 at 11:00 am at Westchester Hills Cemetery Hastings-on-Hudson. Shiva will follow at their home in Ossining at 1:30 pm and again on Sunday starting at 1:00 pm.
