Rutland – Charlene M. LaPointe, 72, a longtime resident of Rutland, passed away peacefully in her home with family by her side on Friday, July 5, 2024 after a 5 ½ year battle with stage 4 cancer.
Charlene is survived by her loving lifetime partner, Pat Hassett of whom they have spent the last 47 years together. She also leaves behind her sister, Kathreen LaPointe of Deerfield Beach, FL; two brothers, Gary LaPointe of Mineola, NY and Donald LaPointe of Vermont and many nieces and nephews. She was born in Winchendon, MA daughter of the late Raoul and Mildred (Alber) LaPointe and is also predeceased by two brothers, John LaPointe and Richard LaPointe.
Charlene graduated from Murdock High School in Winchendon and then continued her education at Worcester State Teachers College where she attained a bachelors degree. Charlene furthered her education by going back to Worcester State University and earned two master’s degrees.
She worked for over 40 years as an educator and spent all but one year with the City of Worcester Public Schools. Her tenure with the Worcester Public Schools started at the former David Hale Fanning Trade School and then continued at the Worcester Vocational Technical High School until she retired in 2014. While working she served as a special education teacher and as director of special education for a period of time before returning back to the classroom where her passion was. Charlene was also tasked on many occasions to assist Worcester Vocational Technical High School by writing and submitting grant proposals to benefit the school.
Charlene had a love for real estate and opened her own real estate company, LaPointe Realty, which she has owned and operated for the past 13 years. She always looked to help others and was constantly helping others in the field with educational resources.
Charlene loved to spend time relaxing and reading a book by her pool and cherished her trips with Pat to visit family in Florida or vacationing in Provincetown with trips to the beach in Truro. She had a loving and caring personality and would always take time out of her day to help anyone in need and never expect anything in return.
A funeral mass will be held on Monday, July 15 at 11 AM in Saint Peter’s Church 929 Main St. Worcester. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, July 14 from 5 to 7 in the Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home 12 Hammond St. Worcester.
The family requests that memorial contributions in memory of Charlene may be made to the Worcester Animal Rescue League 139 Holden St. Worcester, MA 01606 to honor the love that she had for animals.
