Obituary

Mary M. O’Brien of West Roxbury, passed away on June 28, 2024 after a year long illness. Beloved daughter of the late Cornelius F. and Patricia C. (Doherty) O’Brien. Dear sister of Ellen T. Smith and her husband James of Somerset, Kathleen P. O’Brien of Dedham, and the late Thomas J. and Francis G. O’Brien. Sister-in-law of Dorothy O’Brien of East Boston. Loving aunt of Thomas O’Brien and his wife Kristen of Foxborough, Joan Miller and her husband Daniel of TX, Scott O’Brien and his wife Emily of Pembroke, James Smith and his wife Lori of Swansea, Katie Smith of Somerset and Erin Smith of Norfolk. Also survived by many great nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and dear friends including the entire Lohan family.

Mary was a life-long resident of West Roxbury. She worked in retail her entire life, spending over 35 years at Filene’s Basement in Downtown Boston meeting many of her friends still today. She loved all things shopping, traveling, family, and friends (human and furry, especially Bailey the Boston Terrier). She was a regular cruiser, going on more than 20 cruises with Holland America where she made many friends with other travelers and cruise staff. Mary was known as an avid shopper. She could be counted on to know where all the bargains and sales were at any time.

Mary courageously battled an illness for the last year thanks to the staff at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Cambridge, who provided outstanding compassionate care. Additionally, by Mary’s side throughout this illness were her close friends Maureen Keeley, Anne Gustafson, Mary and John Hannon and cousins Peggy Thrappas, Maryann Bailey, and Theresa Daley who brightened her day with their regular visits.

Funeral from the William J. Gormley Funeral Home on Friday, July 12th at 9:00am followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Theresa Church at 10:00am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury. Visiting hours Thursday, July 11th from 3:00pm to 8:00pm in the funeral home. Donations in Mary's memory can be made to Spaulding Rehabilitation at spauldingrehab.org/give to support Spaulding Hospital Cambridge.
