Obituary

Mrs. Cynthia R. Madden, a resident of the Pines of Newmarket Assisted Living Facility in Newmarket, New Hampshire, Andover resident since 1975, beloved wife of Joseph Paul Madden (with whom was married for more than 68 years), passed away at her home on Friday evening, June 21, 2024. She was 89 years old.

Born in Titusville, Pennsylvania she was the beloved daughter of the late Joseph H. and Marian A. (Westgate) Radack. Mrs. Madden was a consummate homemaker, caring for her husband and 3 children throughout her life. Cynthia earned her Bachelor's degree in Sociology at what was then Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, VA - now known as the University of Mary Washington.

Cynthia enjoyed gardening and was a long time member of the Village Garden Club of Andover. She took great pride in creating her beautiful gardens at her homes in Andover and West Harwich. Cynthia also enjoyed the camaraderie of The Andover Red Hat Society - always up for the next field-trip, luncheon or volunteering event. By far, Cynthia’s greatest pride was in caring for her family - and especially her daughter, Beth. Bethy was born with downs-syndrome and they found a beautiful special needs community in the Merrimack Valley. Cynthia and Joseph were active members of that community for more than 45 years building warm relationships that have lasted a lifetime.

Early in their marriage, Cynthia and Joseph spent more than five years living in Germany while Joseph was serving a tour of duty for the US Army, and they undertook many adventures traveling throughout Europe. In addition they were stationed at US Army Forts in New York, Texas, South Carolina, Alabama and Maryland. They both spoke very fondly of their 20 years of service for their country, the wonderful places they got to visit, and - most importantly - the wonderful people they met along the way.

Cynthia and Joseph had a special place in their heart for Cape Cod. Summering at “the Cape” since the early sixties when they returned from Europe. After Joseph retired, they were able to spend five months a year at their beloved house in West Harwich with Bethy. They always spoke of the ‘air’ and the ‘light’ and the wonderful people they met along their journeys and the lifelong friends they made with neighbors. When their daughter Amy was diagnosed with Leukemia, in the mid 1960’s, they spent the last two weeks with her in Sandwich surrounded by extended family as a way to cope with what was to come.

Mrs. Madden is survived by her son Christopher, daughter-in-law Serena, grand-daughters Nichole and Tasha, great-granddaughter Mila-Bella, sister-in-law Nancy, and nephews William and Paul. Mrs. Madden was predeceased by her husband Joseph in 2023, their beautiful daughter Bethy in 2020, and their sweet angel Amy in 1966.
