Obituary

HOLLIS- Stephen “Steve” Bayne Quimby, age 83, passed away peacefully at home on June 18th, 2024surrounded by his loving family after a courageous, two-year battle with cancer.
He was born in Rochester, New Hampshire on January 30th, 1941, a son of Thomas and Geneva Quimby. After high school, Stephen attended Northeast Business College and married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Carolyn Hebert, on September 15th, 1961. Together they built three homes and raised two sons and a daughter who were as devoted to them as they were to their children. He was employed by Central Maine Power Company for almost thirty years, first as a stations operator before becoming a service coordinator for the Portland district until his retirement in 1994. Stephen was a member of the local Masonic Lodge and Hollis Rod and Gun Club.
During the early years of their marriage, he enjoyed taking family and friends by boat on overnight camping trips to the many islands on Casco Bay. There, he loved to fish, dig clams, pull his lobster traps, and build cookouts using seaweed from the water’s edge. Stephen was first and foremost an avid deer and bird hunter and fisherman who loved spending time in the great outdoors. As such, he was particularly gifted at re-telling many stories and tall tales that family and friends loved to hear. He had a true passion for both salt and freshwater fishing, the latter becoming an obsession where he spent countless hours collecting, tinkering or retooling a fishing lure to catch the next “record” trout or salmon to add to his collection. When not spending time in the innumerable acres of woodland or on the many lakes, ponds, rivers and streams of Maine, Stephen could be found in his garage enjoying a Folgers coffee or Coors Light beverage. He was a talented artist and extremely clever at fixing or creating both large and small projects. Stephen loved spending time at home and "Upta Camp" in Upton, Maine where he enjoyed sitting by a campfire with his beloved family. A true prankster at heart, he leaves behind a legacy of practical jokes to be lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
Stephen was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Geneva Quimby, his brother, David Quimby, and cousin and close friends, James Bradbury, Gordon Clemmens, Patrick Perseille, Harvey Small and Isis, his longtime Eskie companion.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Carolyn Ruth (Hebert) Quimby; his children: Thomas Quimby and wife Tracy of Bowdoinham, Scott Quimby and wife Kristin of Westford, Vermont, Stephanie Flaherty of Phoenix, Arizona; grandchildren Morgan and Aidan, brother-in-law and wife, James “Butch” Hebert and Deb Multon of Lyman, Waldo and June Emmons of Lyman and many nieces and nephews; dear friends Albert “Chief” and Julia Cheney, Mike and Robin Lewitt, Sidney “Sid” and Patricia Shaw, Eric Surette, Janet Bradbury, Richard “Bud” Ham, and Rudy Alquist.
A private graveside service will be held for immediate family at Wakefield Cemetery in Hollis, Maine. A celebration of life will be held at a later date in 2024.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Southern Maine, 180 US Rt. 1, Scarborough, Maine 04074 for their support and comfort of Steve in his final days
