Chief Chaplain Of The Boston Fire Department, Reverend Daniel J. Mahoney, Pastor Emeritus of St. Francis De Sales Church in Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Wednesday afternoon, June 19, 2024, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was 94 years of age.
Fr. Dan was born in Haverhill on February 19, 1930, a son of the late Daniel J. Mahoney and Mary G. (Tannian) Mahoney. He grew up in Haverhill where he was educated at St. James Grammer School and graduated from St. James High School.
Fr. Dan was ordained to the Priesthood on February 2, 1956, by Richard Cardinal Cushing. His first assignment after ordination was at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish in Revere. In 1962 he was assigned to St. Joseph's Parish in East Boston. In 1966 he was assigned to St. Zephirin's Parish in Wayland. In 1968 he was assigned to St. Francis De Sales Parish at the "Top of Bunker Hill" and in 1978 was appointed Pastor becoming the eighth Pastor of St. Francis De Sales Parish.
Fr. Dan was appointed to Assistant Catholic Chaplain of the Boston Fire Department on October 1, 1964, and was promoted to Chief Chaplain on October 1, 1991. Fr. Dan is the Chaplain and a member of The Hundred Club of Boston, Chief Chaplain of The Professional Firefighters since 1985, Chaplain of Bunker Hill Council # 62, Knights of Columbus of Charlestown, Chaplain of The Daughters of Isabella # 1 of Charlestown, member of The Old Charlestown Schoolboys Association, the Boston Sparks and Box 52 of Boston.
Fr. Dan is the beloved son of the late Daniel J. Mahoney and Mary G. (Tannian) Mahoney. He is the beloved brother of the late Mary E. Mahoney. He is also survived by his dear friends Joan Rae and her husband Kenny, several cousins and his dedicated Boston Firefighter brothers and sisters.
The Boston Fire Department will escort Fr. Dan from the Carr Funeral Home to St. Francis De Sales Church on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, beginning at 3 P.M.
Fr. Dan will lie in state at St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown on Wednesday, June 26, from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M. followed by a Vigil Mass at 7 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Fr. Dan's Funeral Mass on Thursday morning, June 27, 2024, at 11 A.M. in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown. His burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden.
