Obituary

BRIDGEWATER ---- Richard (Dick) C. Hallberg, Sr., 94, passed on Tuesday, June 18, 2024 at home, after a period of declining health. He was born and raised in Woburn, MA the son of Carl and Vera (Bisbee) Hallberg.

Dick’s strong work ethic was evident from a young age. He bought and repaired a bulldozer, kickstarting his passion for excavation and sitework by working in the nearby Mishawum Road sandpit. This drive and dedication never waned.

Dick served in the US Navy as a Seabee. After his service, he and his wife Joan moved to North Hampton, NH, and he worked at the Pease Air Force Base. Their journey took them to North Reading, MA, where they founded Earth Inc. in 1961. In summers they spent time on Whites Pond in NH where Dick built a road around the pond. In 1972, they returned to NH, restoring a farm and raising beef cattle in New Hampton, eventually settling in Bridgewater on Newfound Lake.

Dick was involved in his community, as a member of the North Reading Masonic Lodge, a Selectman in New Hampton, and a Planning Board member in Bridgewater. Winters found him restoring antique equipment, contributing actively to the Northeast Rockbusters Chapter and Historical Construction Equipment Association. Summers were spent working vigorously on various projects, right up until his passing.

Dick's adventurous spirit was boundless. He raced car #171 at speedways, had his motorcycle license, earned his helicopter pilot license, and owned and captained The Jolly Roger II, a charter fishing boat in Key West, FL. His love for travel took him and Joan across the US and Canada in an RV, creating countless memories along the way.

He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, adventure and Earth Work. Family members include daughters Deb (Mark) Phelps of Danbury and Cindy (Craig) Williams of Alexandria; six grandchildren: Ed Phelps, Jamie Moore, Brandon Williams, Melissa (Dave) Suckling, Carl (Anna) Hallberg, Ashley (Andrew) Suckling; 12 great-grandchildren: Madalyn Phelps, Zaria Moore, Braxton Westbrooks, Kaelyn and Riley Williams, Maxwell and Russell Suckling, Landon and Lydia Hallberg, Maisy Redmond-Hallberg, Anika and Lennox Suckling; one sister, Audrey Scott of Queenstown, MD. In addition to his wife of 70 years, Joan (Peck) Hallberg, he was predeceased by his son, Richard (Dickie), a brother Philip Hallberg and sister Sandra Redfern, and a favorite aunt Ebba Hallberg.

Friends are invited to a graveside service at Homeland Cemetery in Bristol, NH Saturday, July 6, 2024 at 10:00 a.m.

For those wishing, the family suggests donations may be made in Dick’s memory to Northeast Rockbusters, P O Box 6474, Holliston, MA 01746.
