James Thomas Devine, 91, a former resident of Melrose, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2024.
Born and raised in Malden, Massachusetts, Jim was the son of the late James and Mary Barron Devine. He is survived by his daughter, Deirdre, and grandson, Lucas Devine of Stoneham; sisters-in-law Helen and Patricia Devine; nephews John, J. Martin, and Stephen Devine (Shannon Rosbrook); nieces Jennifer Camp and Suzanne Karr (Robert); cousins Michael Feliks and Kathleen Barron; grandnieces Cassandra, Jessica and Rachel Devine and Rachel Camp, and grandnephews James and Alexander Karr. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Catherine Dooling Devine, brothers Edward and J. Martin Devine, brother-in-law James Dooling and nephew Laurence Devine.
Jim was a graduate of Malden Catholic High School, Boston College and Boston College Graduate School of Education. He proudly served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. He was a longtime faculty member emeritus of Salem State College where he helped prepare countless future educators in their preservice study.
Celebrated as the only Devine brother who could cook, Jim was known for his warmth, wit and prodigious memory. The only thing he loved better than food and conversation, was the time he spent with Deirdre and his grandson Lucas.
Relatives & friends are invited to attend his funeral from the Breslin Funeral Home, 610 Pleasant St., Malden on Wednesday June 26th at 9 AM followed by his Funeral Mass celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 600 Pleasant St, Malden at 10 AM. Services will conclude with interment in St. Patrick Cemetery in Stoneham. Visitation will be held at the funeral home prior to the Mass on Wednesday only.
