Obituary

Jerry Clifford Childers
October 13, 1945- June 8, 2024

Jerry Clifford Childers, 78, a lifelong Anderson resident, died June 8, 2024 after a brief illness.

Born in Anderson on October 13, 1945, the son of James Clifford Childers and Doris Childers was a star athlete at Highland High School where he met the love of his life, Pamela Childers (Unger). He went on to Anderson College earning multiple letters in football and track along with his degree in English in 1967. Jerry later earned a Master’s in Education from Ball State University.

Jerry taught English and Occupational Work Experience at Madison Heights High School in a career spanning four decades. He also coached football, baseball, and wrestling helping athletes reach heights they never thought possible through persistence, patience, and a positive mental attitude.

An active member of Bethany Christian Church, Jerry was a talented wood carver with Raintree Woodcarvers, a member of Madison County Retired Teachers Association, and a member of Charlie’s Gang, a local breakfast meeting of former Anderson Ravens.

Jerry was a friend to all, quick with a kind word or funny story, and a smile that would light up a room. His booming voice and large stature hid a sweet, compassionate, and generous soul who will be sorely missed by all.

Most of all, Jerry loved his family - his wife of 57 years, Pam and their three children, Melissa Childers of Indianapolis, Jason (Andrea) Childers of Oswego, Illinois, and Jon (Heidi Gillig) Childers of Milford, Michigan, three grandchildren, Marin, Jackson, and Cullen Childers all of Oswego, and his brother Dr. Edward (Phyllis) Childers and their daughter, Annette Childers of Corrales, New Mexico. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and a special friend, Tony McLaughlin of Troy, Missouri.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 13, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Bethany Christian Church, officiated by Chris Bell and Jim Harless. Burial will follow at East Maplewood Cemetery in Anderson.

Visitation will be held from noon until 2:00 PM also at the church on Thursday.

Memorial contributions may be given to Bethany Christian Church or A Heart For Kids.
