Obituary


Janet B. Johnson, 91, of Hudson, MA died peacefully on June 6th surrounded by her family. She was born in Burlington, VT, September 16, 1932, the daughter of Ross and Jane (Mailhot) Bushey, both deceased. She graduated from Essex Center High School in 1950 and from Johnson State Teachers College in 1954. She married Richard C. Johnson on September 22, 1956. She moved to Worcester, MA in 1965 and taught elementary school in Worcester for 30 years at Roosevelt, Columbus Park and Union Hill Schools before retiring in 1994. She was a member of the Retired Educators Association of Massachusetts-Worcester Chapter (REAM), was the monthly newsletter editor from 1994-2004 and became an honorary member in 2022.

She is survived by her son Richard L. Johnson of Hudson, MA and her daughters Roberta Blake and husband Christopher of Hudson, MA, Rhonda Casey and husband William of West Minster, CO, Donna Riley and husband Don of Virginia, IL; a sister Rosalyn (Bushey) Smith and husband Ivan of York, SC; Eleven grandchildren, Jamie Spencer, Michael Blake, Jessica Blake, Jeffrey Johnson, Robert Casey, Susan Casey, Benjamin Casey, Eleni Koumpis, Derek Koumpis, Paul Riley, David Riley; eighteen great grand-children, Ryan, Noah and Charlotte Spencer; Tyrae, Arianna and William Sims; Harper Johnson; Jeremy and Ruth Casey; Dakota, Taylor and Richard Casey; Payton, Olivia, Caddy, Maddie, Lucas and Kaily Riley; three great-great grandchildren William and Samyr Sims, Bexley Dixon; Sister-in-Law Rose Loso and Brother-in-Law Robert Johnson both of Rutland, VT; Godson’s Gary Loso of Rutland, VT and Thomas Blanchette of Southbridge, MA and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Richard C. Johnson in 2017, a daughter Robin (Johnson) Koumpis in 2010 and a sister Virginia Merchant of Burlington, VT.

She was the happiest when surrounded by her family enjoying holidays, celebrations and spoiling her grandchildren with her sweet treats. She also enjoyed gardening, reading, jigsaw puzzles, watching gameshows and was a die-hard Red Sox and Patriots fan.

On behalf of the family, a special thank you to all of the staff at Shrewsbury Nursing Home for the kindness, loving care and friendship so freely given to our mother. Her family also extends gratitude to Notre Dame Hospice for the comfort and care they provided.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, June 10, 2024 from 4-7:00 p.m. in Nordgren Memorial Chapel 300 Lincoln St. Worcester, MA 01605. A funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Stephen’s Church 357 Grafton St. Worcester. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton.
