Shirley J. (Powell) Valentine, 81, of Marion Center, PA, and formerly of Maryville, TN died on Sunday, June 2, 2024 at Punxsutawney Area Hospital, Punxsutawney, PA, surrounded by her family and friends.
The daughter of Samuel H. Sr. and Mary Anna (Smith) Powell, she was born on May 2, 1943 in Cherry Tree, PA.
Shirley was a 1961 graduate of Purchase Line High School. She attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA) in Maryville, TN, where she had served as a Deaconess.
Prior to her retirement, Shirley was employed as an encryptionist with the FBI and as a teaching assistant at the Maryville SDA.
In Maryville, TN, some of Shirley’s favorite pastimes revolved around the Maryville Newcomers and the Quilt Guild.
Shirley loved crafting, making cards, quilting and cooking.
She is survived by her stepson: DA Valentine II (Debbie) of Joelton, TN; her siblings: Joyce White of Sykesville, PA; Samuel Powell, Jr (Carol) of Marion Center, PA; James Clifford Powell, Sr. (Bonny) of Seymour, TN; William “Bill” Powell (Wendy) of Mineral Point, PA; Sharon Laney (David) of Marion Center, PA; her step grandchildren: Anthony, III; Donald; Austin and Dylan Valentine and her step great-grandchildren: Nicholas and Dakota.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, D. Anthony Valentine (2019), her nephew BJ Powell (1996), and her sisters: Sandra Lloyd (2017) and Patti Wagner (2023).
Shirley was surrounded by many friends who stayed close to her after her move from Tennessee; Dr. Larry & Vicki Rahn, Gail & Nes Karnoupakis, Odell Warren, and Sydney Nicewonger, to name just a few. She made new friends here in PA and enjoyed spending time with her extended family. The family would like to thank Dr. Pat Lambiotte, Jennifer Weaver, and April Fetterman, who took care of Shirley and her family during the last moments of her earthly life.
On Sunday, August 18, 2024 a 2:00 p.m. memorial service will be held at the Old Mahoning Baptist Church in Home, PA. Shirley’s final resting place will be in Tennessee in October.
