It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our legendary uncle, brother, neighbor, colleague, and friend Robert L. Maguire, of Charlestown, MA, better known as "Muff". A truly fearless spirit, who left us far too early on May 26, 2024. He was surrounded by loving family and friends until the end. Born on November 16, 1952, in Boston, MA, Muff lived a life defined by his larger-than-life personality, boundless energy, daring exploits, and love for music.
Muff was born with an insatiable appetite for all things exhilarating, and he was highly active throughout his entire life, enjoying the thrills of discovery. His need for speed saw him racing snowmobiles, motorcycles, and cars, skydiving from dizzying heights, scuba diving and sailing the open seas, where he loved seeing whales breaching out in the open water where he was often only a few feet away. He faced all of these challenges head-on, embodying the true spirit of a daredevil. He was zealous about sharing those joys with those who joined him.
As a self-employed contractor/business owner, Muff brought the same enthusiasm to his work as he did to his countless adventures. As a friend, he was constant, staunch, loving, and never, ever boring!
Music was certainly one of Muff's greatest loves. In his earlier years playing the saxophone, attending live concerts, or curating his extensive collection, music was the everchanging soundtrack to his life, and his taste was unmatched. His mother took him to see Aretha Franklin as a teenager and he was hooked for life, a memory he always held dear. His diverse knowledge and deep appreciation for the art form brought so much joy to those around him. From DJ'ing out of a garage he rented in Charlestown to blasting tunes from funk to country in his home and favorite cars at all hours of the day, he created countless memories filled with rhythm and harmony.
Muff never married, yet he had deep loving relationships that meant the world to him. He cherished his close-knit circle of friends and extended family. He was proud of the neighborhood youth he coached and watched succeed. It was important to him that people knew they had limitless potential and to go for it, whatever it was. His funny stories, infectious laughter, and zest for life will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. He lived life on his terms, always embracing it with a brave and hopeful heart.
He is preceded by his beloved parents, Dorothy F. Maguire and John J. Maguire Jr., his brothers John J. Maguire III and Lawrence F. Maguire, and his big sister Susan J. Maguire Serrano. He is survived by his brother Stephen M. Maguire, his many nieces, Kimi A. Serrano, Kristan Padula, Ana Karina DaCosta, Mollie A. Maguire, Paige D. Henrick, his nephews, David M. Serrano, Sunny P. DaCosta, grand nephews Gavin M. Maguire, Flynn M. Maguire, Ronan S. Henrick, extended family and countless friends who were like family to him. Muff's unique spirit, love for music, and dedication to his many passions will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
A celebration of Muff’s life will be held at the Knights of Columbus in Charlestown on July 14th from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his name to the Charlestown Boys and Girls Club, 15 Green St. Charlestown, supporting sports and music education for young people.
Muff was one of a kind, truly original in every way, and his life was a testament to the power of living boldly and loving life deeply. Though he has left us physically, his spirit and passion for life will continue to inspire us all in our own lives to move with courage and love. You are so very loved and you will live in our hearts, forever, Muff.
