Obituary

FITZGERALD, James D, of Roslindale, Falmouth and a regular visitor to Florida, affectionately known by many as “Fitzy”, passed away suddenly on May 26, 2024 at the age of 88. Born in Boston, he was son of the late James and Catherine (Baird) Fitzgerald and beloved husband of the late Joan (Doherty) Fitzgerald. He is survived by his daughter Kathryn F. Fitzgerald and his longtime partner Marlene Lloyd of Florida. James is predeceased by his brother-in-law Leo Doherty and his wife Mary Schlittler as well as his sister-in-law, Marjorie Doherty. James is also survived by his sister-in-law Margaret, her husband Michael Sheehy, and “grandsons”, Terence and Gregory, his longtime fishing partners. He leaves behind many adoring friends, nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews, Godchildren, and several namesakes.

A graduate of Roslindale High School in 1953, James joined the Army and served his country during the Korean War. He worked for Boston Edison (Eversource) for over 40 years. He was a longtime union member with both local 369 and 59. After retiring from Edison he took a part-time job with the Steamship Authority on Cape Cod for ten years. James served as former President of the Holy Name Band in West Roxbury and was a member of the Elks and a former member of the Falmouth Men’s Club. He loved fishing and spending time on his boat in Falmouth, Massachusetts. He was an avid dog lover and doted on his grand dog Ella and former grand dogs Spencer and Razor. He will be remembered for his quick wit, warm smile, strong faith, father figure to many and found joy in frequenting ice cream shops and breakfast restaurants around Falmouth with family and friends.

Visiting Hours will be held on Tuesday, June 4th, from 4-8pm, at the Gormley Funeral Home, 2055 Centre St., West Roxbury, MA. Funeral from the funeral home, on Wednesday, June 5th, at 8:30am, followed by a Funeral Mass, at 9:30am, at Holy Name Church, West Roxbury. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery, Boston, MA.
