Martin J. Whalen, Jr. of Brockton, formerly of South Boston, passed away peacefully at home on May 27, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of the late Margaret (McCarthy) Whalen for 60 years.
Martin was the father of Debra Batson and her husband Joseph of Randolph, the late Martin J. Whalen III of Brockton, and Kathleen Logue and her husband Robert of Hartwick, NY. He was the loving grandfather of Joanne and Denise Batson and Faith Logue and loving great-grandfather of Lauren Conlon and Declyn Levins. He was the brother of the late Marie Bevacqua of Quincy, John Whalen of Squantum, Helen Audette of Quincy, Florence Higgins of Barnstable, William Whalen of Savannah, GA, Rita O’Connell of Weymouth and the late Lillian Smith of Holbrook.
Raised in South Boston, Martin graduated from Gate of Heaven High School in 1952 and from Northeastern University Class of 1970. He worked for the Gillette Company as a Marketing Research Manager, retiring after 38 years of service.
Martin was active in the community. He was a member of West Little League in Brockton and was a coach for many years, a team manager and a league officer. He was also the President of the Brockton Little League City Series Committee for 18 years. Martin was a devoted Red Sox and Patriots Fan. Martin was a CCD teacher at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish for 10 years and also served on the Parish Board for 2 years. Martin always loved helping children.
Visiting hours will be held at the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont St., Brockton on Sunday June 2, 2024 from 2-5pm. Procession from the funeral home on Monday at 9am for Funeral Mass at 10:30 at St. Mary Church in Randolph followed by burial at St. Mary Cemetery.
