Obituary

SILVER LAKE, NH – George Cameron (“Cam”) Greene, age 90, peacefully passed away on May 24, 2024, at a nursing facility in Portland, ME after a long illness.
He was born in Somerville, Massachusetts on September 8, 1933, a son of the late Charles Edward Greene Sr. and Marion A. (Morse) Greene.
He was raised in Needham, MA and graduated from Neeham High School in 1951.
During his school years, Cam was active in the Boy Scouts of America achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. He was also a participant in student government and athletics, including being a member of the track and basketball teams. Cam went on to attend Springfield College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Recreation & Youth Leadership and was the 1955 graduating class President. While at Springfield, he participated in track, cross-country and men’s gymnastics
Cam joined the Navy and attended Officer’s Candidate’s School and upon graduation was commissioned an Ensign. He then completed the Naval Flight School and was designated a Naval Aviator. He served as a pilot,, flying various Naval aircraft, including the Lockheed S-3 Viking, Anti- Submarine Warfare plane. Cam was selected by the Navy to be the first carrier-based Squadron Commander of the S-3. While in the Navy, he earned a master’s degree at the University of Minnesota. He was stationed at various locations across the US and Europe. After 26 years of meritorious service, receiving numerous citations and commendations, he retired at the rank of Captain to Tamworth, NH.
During his retirement he taught skiing, was active with the local Boy Scout Troup #151 and sat on the town’s Scholarship Committee for many years. In his later years, he and his dog Maggie (a certified therapy dog) visited a number of nursing homes in southern NH bringing great joy to all the residents.
Cam was predeceased by his wife, Gail Munroe Greene who passed away in 2023; his brother Roger Sproul Greene of Bloomington, IN in 2015; and his son Bruce Cameron Greene of San Diego, CA in 2016.
He is survived by his brother LTC. Charles E. Greene, Jr. USAF (RET.) of Schenectady, NY; his children – Sandra Lee Greene of S. Weymouth, MA and Steven Lester Greene of Dripping Springs, TX; his step-daughter Kristine Hedtler of Brunswick, ME; his grandchildren – Charles Cameron Greene of NC, Danielle Marie Greene of CA, Heather Dube of CT, April Ann Greene of TX, Marianne Cameron Greene of MA, Matthew Warren Greene of MA; and many great-grandchildren.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no funeral service and burial will be at a future date in Chocorua, NH.
