Obituary

Our beloved Sylvia Irene (Price) Jackson, 84, of Worcester passed away on Sunday, May 19th. Born in Harlem, NY to William and Frances (Donahue) Price, she was the seventh of twelve children. Syl, as she was affectionately known, leaves her daughter, Stephanie Hinton of Fort Washington, MD; her grandchildren, Tristiaña Hinton of Oxon Hill, MD and Kemal Hinton of Fort Washington, MD; a step-son Lloyd Dey of Boston, MA; two step-grandchildren King and London Dey, both of Worcester, MA; a husband, Carl Dey of Worcester; a brother, Rev. Richard Price and his wife, Josie of Providence, RI; two sisters, Iris Dickerson of Worcester and Joyce Price and her husband, Lloyd of Providence, RI; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her two sons, Richard G. Jackson, Jr. and Erick G. Jackson; three brothers, William Jr., John, and Wendell; and five sisters, Delores, Adelaide, Marilyn, Donna, and Phyllis.
She graduated from Commerce High School in 1958, then eloped and moved to Ohio. Sylvia eventually found her way back to Worcester with her three small children in tow. She attended Quinsigamond Community College, where she studied Social Work.
Over the years, Syl took her bubbly, people-loving personality all across the city. She held various careers including civil rights advocate, housing manager, certified nursing assistant, and elections clerk. When she wasn’t doing those many things, she loved spending time with family and friends who adored her, including her best friends Beverly Springs and Gloria Ross. She loved Langston Hughes, beautiful flowers, and her massive collection of bells. Sylvia never shied away from a chance to run down someone’s family history, whether they were a Price/Donahue or a Worcester-rite. There wasn’t a date she didn’t know, a moment she couldn’t recall, or a face she ever forgot.
She will be sorely missed by everyone who was gifted the opportunity to know her.
Visiting hours will occur Tuesday, May 28th from 10:00 am until noon in O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue. A funeral service will follow at noon in the funeral home. Burial immediately after in Hope Cemetery.
