Obituary

Marie Eliza Labranche, affectionately known as Mme Hubert, transitioned peacefully on Thursday, May 16, 2024 after a 4-month battle with vicious colon cancer. Born to Michel Carmeleau and Marie Aniolie (Imosy) Dumornay on November 1, 1936, in Mirebalais, Haiti, she was a beacon of light and warmth in her family, church, and community, which she dearly loved.

Mare Eliza was the eldest born of the Dumornay family. She is survived by sister Marie Berthonine Desire, brother Jean Reslet & wife Willine Dumornay, brother Joseph Michelet & wife Marie Dieumene Dumornay, sister-in-law Suzanne Dumornay, brother Luc Pierre & wife Denise Dumornay, brother Marc Elie & wife Leena Dumornay, and sister Marie Yvrose & husband Marcel Joseph.

In 1955, Marie Eliza married her beloved Jean Hubert Labranche (deceased) at their family church L’Eglise De Dieu Bethel De Mirebalais, marking the beginning of enduring love and shared commitment to family. Mme Hubert showered love onto her children Jean Robert (deceased), Mimose (deceased), Yves Clausel, Jean Malherbe & wife Marie Audule, Pierre Rolin, Anide Marie & husband Marc Dufanal, Minoche & husband Serge Guerrier, Eugenie (deceased) Marie Wadiche, Louis Wajems & wife Audreene Diana, and Wachmide.

Her grandchildren: Elisa S. & husband Hilaire Joseph, Melinda N. Labranche, Malherbito Labranche, Gody R. Labranche, Cynthia M. & husband Maher Senatus, Josue Labranche, Emmanuel Labranche (deceased), Joanne M. Labranche, Nashadee A. Guerrier, Adam Paul, Isaac S. Guerrier, Mahari E. Guerrier, Jeremiah J. Paul, Rolina Labranche, and Alexandra J. Labranche. Her great-grandchildren: Alicia H. Joseph, Zachary Joseph, and Melody C. Senatus. Her great- great- grandchild Desyra Joseph-Robinson.

Mme Hubert’s life can be encapsulated by two things: love for Jesus Christ her personal Savior and love of family and friends. Her favorite things to do were to praise and worship God, go to church at L’Eglise De Dieu Bethel, cook and feed all her kids, family, and friends, and work as an entrepreneur. In her everyday conversation, things as simple as ‘see you later’ had to be punctuated with “si Bondye vle” (translation: if God wants). As a life-long, dedicated member and pillar of L’Eglise De Dieu Bethel, in 1964, Marie Eliza was ordained as a deacon and a significant part of the treasury committee. In 1984, with great honor and pride, Marie Eliza was inducted into the Board of Advisor of L’Eglise De Dieu Bethel.

In 1993, after departing her employment from Newton Wellesley Nursing Home, Marie Eliza pursued one of her biggest passions, becoming a full-time entrepreneur. Financial literacy and entrepreneurship were always topics of interest. She took enormous pleasure in going to New York City (NYC) with her children and grandchildren for wholesale purchases, and then retailing
merchandise throughout Massachusetts. Every road trip was filled with lessons on God, life, and financial responsibility. She would constantly tell them: Ou sipoze kon fe ekonomik! Pa gaspiye lajan w! (Translation: You’re supposed to be economical! Don’t waste your money!) Until her last days, her entrepreneur spirit maintained through delivered orders from NYC and selling goods at her beloved day care program Sant Belvi Center in Mattapan, MA.

Extended family was important to Mme Hubert, as well. She did not believe in anyone being a stranger, but instead a child of God she had not yet met. She was friendly, funny, and a counselor to many. She took pride in her peacemaking abilities and keeping those around her unified. Marie Eliza Labranche will be greatly missed by many!
