Katherine Ann "Kay" Hickey of Atwood Avenue, Johnston, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2024, surrounded by her family.
Born in Fall River, MA, the daughter of the late James Milton and Katherine Gertrude (Henry) Brindley. She made her home in Johnston throughout her adult life, spending summers in Narragansett.
Kay had attended Putnam Catholic Academy and graduated with a BA from Regis College, where she became fluent in Spanish and German. She began her teaching career right out of college and spent many years in this profession that she loved. Throughout this time, she raised her three children, Jack, Kathy, and Betty.
She went on to earn a Master's Degree in Special Education, and taught as a Resource Teacher at Henry Barnard School. She then transitioned into higher education at Rhode Island College as a professor of Special Education. Teaching was always her talent and passion. She retired in 1992 but always remained active.
In retirement Kay enjoyed winters in Florida and summer sunsets at her home in "Sunset Shores". She enjoyed painting, a good game of golf and a boat ride with "Seven Summers" playing in the background. Sipping a nice red sangria and petting her rescue cat Max always put a smile on her face. Most importantly she loved time with her family, especially when they were all together.
She leaves behind her daughters, Kathy K. Savage, and her husband Robert, of Delray Beach Fl, and Elizabeth A. Stamp, and her husband William of Johnston, and her daughter in law, Mary Hickey of Wakefield. She was the mother of the late John G. “Jack” Hickey. She is the grandmother of Luke and Leigh Savage, Liam, Ava, Grace and Shane Stamp. She has four great grandchildren, Kate, Morgan, Justin and Wyatt (her birthday twin).
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday May 18th at 10am in St. Robert Bellarmine Church, 1804 Atwood Avenue, Johnston, Rhode Island. Visitation respectfully omitted.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Kay's name may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. www.stjude.org
