Obituary

Thomas “Tom” J. Grattan, a life-long resident of West Roxbury, passed away suddenly May 11, 2024, peacefully sleeping in the home he lived in with Patricia “Pat” his beloved wife for over 60 years.

In addition to his loving wife, Tom leaves his devoted children: Kerry Ciapciak & her husband James, Robin Malone & her husband Scott (BFD), Joseph Grattan & his wife Nancy, Michael Grattan & his wife Lynn; his cherished grandchildren: Ryan Malone, Patrick Ciapciak & his wife Dr. Ashley Ciapciak, Casey Ciapciak & her fiancé David Thibault, Kristen Ciapciak, Sarah Malone (BPD), Matthew Malone, Emma Grattan, Faith Grattan, Gabrielle Grattan, Julia Grattan, Lauren Grattan, Lindsey Grattan, Thomas Grattan & Elizabeth “Libby” Grattan; and good friend & brother-in-law Dr. Jon Cronin & loving sister-in-law Geri McKenna; as well as 30 nieces & nephews whom he loved very much.

Tom was a loving, devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle & friend. He was soft-spoken, humble, quick-witted & kind-hearted. Tom was a role model for all who knew him. Tom’s family was his top priority, and that included his large extended family. He was involved in all that his children did, having coached many Parkway hockey & baseball teams. One of the greatest joys of his life was attending his 14 grandchildren’s games.

After graduating Hyde Park High, he was a semi-pro hockey player, recruited by Northeastern Univ., but Tom chose to enlist in the US Navy instead, serving on the USS Northampton. Soon after he became a carpenter & then later an ironworker. Tom was a proud member of Ironworkers Local 7. Later in his career, he was an ironworker for the MBTA. He joined the Knights of Columbus & was an active, life-long member for over 60 years.

Tom was pre-deceased by his brother Frederick Grattan and his parents Frederick and Alice Grattan.
Visiting hours at the William J Gormley Funeral Home, 2055 Centre St, West Roxbury on Thursday, May 16, 4-8 pm. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, May 17 at 11:30 AM at St. Theresa of Avila, 2078 Centre St., West Roxbury, MA. Interment with military honors at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Jimmy Fund or charity of your choice.
