LACONIA ---- Donald “Don” McGrath, 95, of Dartmouth Street, passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at the Belknap County Nursing Home in Laconia, NH.
Don, a lifelong resident of Laconia and communicant of St. Andre Bessette Parish, was born to the late William and Emma (Fournier) McGrath. After graduating from Laconia High School in 1947, he proudly served his country for seven years; first in the US Army Air Corp then transferring to the US Air Force. He returned to Laconia as a timekeeper at Scott and Williams. Don re-connected with his elementary school classmate, Gloria Simoneau, when he saw her working at O’Shea’s Department Store. They were married for 53 years.
Donald retired from the US Post Office after 30 years of service. He then enjoyed several years as a school bus driver where he is fondly remembered by students and their parents.
As an avid golfer throughout his life, Don belonged to many local golf courses. For 10 years after retiring Don enjoyed his winter home with his wife, Gloria, on Hidden Lakes Golf Course in New Smyrna Beach, FL. Don also enjoyed hockey and boating on Lake Winnipesaukee.
Donald is survived by his four children: Marcia McGrath Bouchard (Ronald), Lynn McGrath, Judy McGrath (Raymond Vigue), and Shaun McGrath (Shana); seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. In addition to his parents and his wife Gloria, he was predeceased by his siblings Dorothy Harbilas, Roger McGrath and Shirley Salta.
There will be no Calling Hours.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at 10:00 am at St. Andre Bessette Parish - Sacred Heart Church, 291 Union Ave., Laconia, NH.
Burial will immediately follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Garfield Street, Laconia.
The family would like to express their gratitude to all of the staff of Belknap County Nursing Home for the wonderful care that Don received during his residency.
