Obituary

STANDISH - Russell G. Smith 94 passed away May 5,2024 at his home in Standish after a long battle with prostate cancer. Russell was born at home in Standish to Llewelyn and Florence Adelle (Whitney) Smith on April 14,1930. Russell had 8 siblings, Ralph(Clifford), Virginia, Alice, Vera, Arnold, Phyllis, Fred, and Rodney.

Russell lived in Standish all of his life, attending the local schools. He met the love of his life Florence Luce and married her on August 5, 1950. They had been married 72 years at the time of Florence's death in August 2022. He is survived by 2 sons, Dale A and wife Dora of Standish, David A of Frenchtown, Maine, 1 daughter Lydia A and husband Perry Perkins of South Hiram. He is predeceased by baby son Darrell A.. Russell had 3 grandchildren: Heath Smith of Waterboro, Danielle Chauvette of Waterboro, and Devon Smith of Lewiston. He had 7 great-grandchildren: Dawson, Olivia, Dalen, Emily, Hope, Allison, and Andrew. He also had several nieces and nephews, along with several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Russell worked at Sanford Woolen Mills, Wright Spinning in Westbrook, and CMP Southern Hydro at Bonny Eagle. He retired as head operator from Southern Hydro Bonny Eagle Hydro station in 1991 after 39 years of service. He was a fine carpenter and had built several homes in the Standish area, along with a camp on First Roach Pond that he enjoyed with family and friends for many years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He could often be found hunting the woods near Frenchtown / Kokadjo, and fly fishing most of the ponds in that area. He enjoyed bowling with close friends and was a member of the local Masonic Lodge for many years.

Graveside services and burial will be held for both Russell and Florence at Dow's Corner Cemetery on Cape Road in Standish at a later date.
