Obituary

CRONIN, Edward Joseph, an avid reader, movie buff, sports fan and musical connoisseur, passed away at the age of 63 on April 30, 2024, after a long illness.

The lifelong Massachusetts resident, the son of Rona M. Cronin and the late Edward Cronin, was known to his many friends for his deep knowledge of sports, particularly when it came to the Celtics, the Red Sox and the six-time NFL champion Patriots.

Ed launched his own business as the head of Cronin and Associates Constables and worked for a time as a private investigator for Joe Allen Detective Agency. He became a familiar face to patrons at the NYC Jukebox nightclub in Boston’s theater district and Houlihan’s in Boston’s Faneuil Hall while working as a bartender, always quick with a quip and a cocktail.

His favorite authors included Robert B. Parker, creator of the Massachusetts-based “Spenser” books, and he also worked for a time as a freelance writer. Ed was a varsity basketball player at Suffolk University in Boston and a graduate of Catholic Memorial High School in West Roxbury. He remained an active athlete across the decades, running in several sprint triathlons.

His wide range of hobbies ran the gamut from reading and writing to movies, swimming, biking -- and the occasional cold beer at a reasonable price. He was a devoted son, brother and uncle.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his sister, Kathleen Cronin Fisher of Hillsborough, N.C., her husband Louis, and their children Joseph, Meg of Rennes, France, and Luke; his brother, James J. Cronin of Manchester, N.H., his wife Kimberly and their daughter Riley; and his stepmother, Ann Shaughnessy.
