Susan Mercer Evans, 63, of Ocilla, Georgia, died Thursday, May 2, 2024, at Lumber City Nursing and Rehab in Lumber City, Georgia.
Graveside services will be 11 AM, Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Spring Hill Cemetery in Irwin County, Georgia, with the Rev. Gary Griffin officiating. The family will greet friends following the service at the cemetery.
Mrs. Evans was born December 9, 1960, in Irwin County, Georgia to Florene Revis Mercer and the late Wilson Mercer. She earned several credits from Ben Hill-Irwin Technical School and worked for Irwin Manufacturing and the Bank of Ocilla. She managed Hardee’s and was also a homemaker. She had a passion for history and loved visiting Savannah and Jekyll Island for research into Georgia’s history. Mrs. Evans was an avid reader and writer as well. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Ambrose.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Benny “Fred” Evans of Ocilla; daughter and son-in-law, Heather & Lee Smith of Fitzgerald; grandchildren: Ryan Smith, Rylee Smith, and Jerad Smith, all of Fitzgerald and Kayla & Michael Rivas of Marietta; a great-granddaughter: Ansli Smith of Fitzgerald; her mother, Florene Mercer of Ocilla; a sister, Rosemary Christie of Ocilla; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a son, Wilson Fred Evans; two brothers: Henry Mercer and Ronald Mercer; a sister, Renee Dilling; her mother-in-law, Shirley Mixon and her brother-in-law, Mark Young.
