Obituary

Lenora Jane (Fletcher) Townsend died peacefully at home in Byron GA on April 29, 2024. She was 93 years old. Lenora was sometimes called Lenora Jane or Nora Jane by family and longtime friends. To her immediate family she was “mama” or “granny”. She was a beautiful, sweet lady with never an unkind word for anyone (maybe there was that one time when someone really deserved it). Everyone who met her in person loved her in just a matter of minutes. She had a realness, a sincerity that quickly came across when first meeting her. Nothing fake or pretend about her. Even though her physical body eventually failed, her mind was sharp as a tack right until the very end.

Lenora is preceded in death by her husband T. E. Townsend, her son Charles (Doc) Townsend, brothers Frank (Junior) Fletcher Jr, James (Red) Fletcher, Charles (Charlie) Fletcher, John David Fletcher, father Frank Fletcher Sr, and mother Thelma Blount Fletcher. She is survived by her daughter Mary Townsend, son Walt (Lara) Townsend, grandson Charles (Charlie) Townsend, granddaughter Coleen (Chandler) Townsend Meek and daughter-in-law Angie Townsend.

Lenora was born in Irwin County, GA on January 16, 1931. She was the second of five siblings and the only girl. She was born to a farming family and was proud of her heritage. She always loved to visit family and friends in Irwin County and surrounding areas. She enjoyed telling her children and grandchildren stories of her childhood and years past. She found joy by spending her days reading, doing word search puzzles, and listening to southern gospel music. Lenora read the Macon Telegraph daily and looked forward to the arrival of the Ocilla Star newspaper every week in the mail. From the flowers of spring to the changing colors of fall, the beauty of nature brought her so much happiness. Bluebirds in the spring and a Cardinal sitting in a tree outside the window will forever serve as a reminder of her.

Lenora will be missed terribly. She was loved immensely by family and friends. Lenora’s service will be graveside at Pinetta Baptist Church cemetery at 11:00 AM on Friday May 3rd. The address for the cemetery is 394 Pinetta Rd, Ocilla, GA 31774. All family and friends are invited to attend.

A special thank you to the Scott family for all their love and support over the years. Also, a thank you to the office of Dr. Alan Justice (Tina Saiani) and Hospice Care Options for their exceptional care and support during her final days.
