Herman Smith, 87, of Alma, Georgia, died Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at Bacon County Hospital, in Alma, Georgia.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Friday, May 3, 2024, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald, Georgia, with the Rev. Jeremy Cox officiating and Bobby Murray delivering the eulogy. Interment will follow in the New Hope Cemetery, in Coffee County, Georgia. The family will receive friends Thursday evening, from 6 PM until 8 PM, at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.
Mr. Smith was born May 6, 1936, in Ben Hill County, Georgia, to the late Henry & Lillie Mae Cumbass Smith. He retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation as a heavy equipment operator and assistant foreman. Mr. Smith enjoyed watching Westerns and the INSP tv channel. He enjoyed fishing as well as raising chickens and Jack Russell Terriers.
He is survived by his daughter, Beverley Murray of McRae; two grandsons: Bobby & Brandy Murray of Fitzgerald and Chris & Amber Murray of Statesboro; and a great-grandson, Bryler Murray. Several nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Vera Mae Rowell Smith; son-in-law, John E. Murray; four brothers: Allen Smith, Bennie Smith, Henry Smith, Jr. and John Smith and an infant sister.
Paulk Funeral Home, Fitzgerald, is in charge of arrangements.
