LIMINGTON – On April 26, 2024, at Maine Medical Center, with his loving family by his side, Henry “Skip” Warren Maddocks III, age 74, left this “Great Adventure” and moved on to the next one. He was born on February 21, 1950, in Bangor, Maine to parents Henry “Sonny” Warren Maddocks, Jr. and Beverly Ann Reed. His family originally resided in Pine Point, Maine before relocating to Hollis Center when Skip was eight years old.
After graduating from Bonny Eagle High School, Skip enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he began Seabee and underwater demolition training, skills which he utilized during his employment with Cianbro Corp. in Portland, Maine repairing dams and building bridges throughout the state with his dad. He later worked at B&M Baked Beans maintaining cannery equipment and production lines. He also worked at Maremont Corp. in Saco maintaining production lines and machinery. Additionally, he was an independent logger, and designed and built portable chain saw mills which were structured to cut any and all over-sized logs that he could track down.
In 1985, Skip was a candidate for, participated in, and became the sole survivor of an experimental cancer treatment protocol at Dana-Farber in Boston for several months. After returning home, due to health issues, Skip became a stay-at-home Dad, spending precious time with his children. He and his wife Kathy raised three wonderful children at their home in Limington: Sarra, Hank, and Jessica.
Skip enjoyed riding and “repairing” motorcycles of all types, going on long road trips, and just putting around town. He enjoyed raising farm animals and vegetable gardens, and he especially enjoyed raising children and coaching town baseball teams. Skip loved kids so much that he opened the family home every day after school to all the neighborhood kids, and any others who would happen by, where he fed them all mountains of homemade French fries, buckets of spaghetti, and loads of pizza. Over the years, he would say how much he missed the days of always having a bunch of kids around. Although most of them belonged to someone else, he loved them all as his own and enjoyed watching them grow into real people over the years, many of whom still stop by just to say “hi” to him, or show off a new truck or car, or new babies of their own.
As well as kids, Skip was a lover of all animals–from the very smallest to the very largest. He was constantly bringing home puppies and kittens for the family, along with a few exotics. It was the norm to find some form of “unusual” animal wandering about the house: parrots, iguanas, and ferrets being among the menagerie.
Skip was forever telling fantastic and sometimes even unbelievable stories, only for the listener to later learn that most of those stories were true. He also had many little whimsical sayings. Whenever anyone was headed out the door, his goodbye was always “Watch out for the other guy” and “Do good.” So, Skip, wherever your new journeys and adventures lead you be sure to watch out for that other guy and do good. We will continue to be vigilant in watching out for him too, and we will surely strive to do good. You are deeply loved and sadly missed.
Skip is survived by his wife of 54 years, Kathleen Adams Maddocks of Limington; their daughter Sarra Maddocks and grandchildren Ayla and Chase Porter of South Portland; son Henry “Hank” Maddocks, wife Anna and grandchildren Esther Maddocks and Gabby St. Savior of Hiram; and daughter Jessica Atkinson and her husband Dustin of Biddeford.
Skip is predeceased by his parents, and his two brothers Donald Maddocks and Dexter Maddocks. He is survived by his sisters Judy Maddocks Cohen and Jeanne Maddocks Biden, both of Florida.
