Bob Shaw, 91, of Mansfield, passed away peacefully at his home on April 28, 2024. Loving husband of the late Virginia Shaw, he was also predeceased by his son, Stephen, his sister, Marie Merci and his long-time companion, Erla Esposito. He is survived by his brother, Francis X Shaw and his wife, Annette, of Mansfield, his sister, Joan Monahan, of Hingham, and his sister, Gertrude Tinney, of Quincy. He is also survived by his daughter Ginny Sawyer of Foxboro, his daughter Paulette Shaw Querner and her husband Michael of Harwich, his son Robert C Shaw and his wife, Sharon of Norton, his son Gregory Shaw and his wife Ann Marie of Harwich, his son David Shaw of Mansfield his daughter in law, Sarah Shaw, of Norton and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.
Bob was born in Boston on July 28, 1932. He enlisted in the Army at age 17 just before the start of the Korean War. He was assigned to the Combat Engineers Battalion, supporting the 2nd Infantry Division. He participated in 8 major battles in Korea, most notably in the Battle of Kunu-Ru, where over 75% of his fellow soldiers were either killed or captured. He received 14 medals in recognition of his service, including the Presidential Unit Citation and the Meritorious Service Medal. Though he retired from the army in 1972, he remained close to many of the men he served with in Korea. Bob was an active and supportive veteran of the 2nd Infantry and Combat Engineers for the past 70 years.
He started his civilian career in 1972 and soon after he founded Shaw Auto Leasing. In addition to running the family business, Bob served terms as President of Massachusetts Car and Truck Rental and Leasing Association and the Massachusetts Independent Auto Dealers Association. Bob continued working until his 80’s and was an active parishioner of Saint Mary’s Church in Mansfield since 1961
Bob’s family would like to thank all his caregivers in the VA system, Hahn Home Health, and Old Colony Hospice and assistance from Mansfield Fire Department for the excellent and compassionate care they provided him these past few years.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours on Tuesday, May 7th from 4:00-8:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main Street, Mansfield.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 8th at 11:00 A.M. in Saint Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt Street (Route 106) Mansfield. Burial, along with military honors, will follow at Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Mansfield.
In lieu of flowers, Bob requested that donations in his memory be made to the New England Center and Home for Veterans, 17 Court Street, Boston, MA 02108.
