Marija Danute Keturakis- McCarthy born on February 4, 1959 to Andrius Keturakis and Veronika Keturakis (Kunskas) passed suddenly at her home in South Boston, MA on April 21, 2024. She was 65. A life long resident of South Boston primarily on Thomas Park.
Marija graduated from the University of Massachusetts - Amherst with a BS in Food and Animal Science in 1980. She had attended Fontbonne Academy in Milton, MA and St Peter’s School in South Boston.
She spent her early career working in the food business, chocolate making in Cambridge then ice cream at Breyer in Framingham and later managed the family property for the Keturakis Realty Co.
She was an active board member on both the South Boston Lithuanian Citizens Association and Taupa Lithuanian Federal Credit Union and also a member of the St Peter’s Lithuanian Parish in South Boston.
Marija had a heart of gold and cared about people and animals her whole life. She nursed her mother, Veronika, through the end of her life, took in new Lithuanian immigrants helping them get established and even as a child would care for a variety of stray animals. She was generous and always greeted people with a smile and laugh. Most of all she cared for and loved her son, Lukas, helping with his school activities and being excited by his artwork and creative business ventures. She also loved to travel; often vacationed in Newport and North Conway and visited Lithuania several times. She enjoyed making fabric wreaths to decorate her doors, bowling in the local league, skiing, gardening, and racing in the Figawi sailboat race to Nantucket.
Marija is survived by her husband, Timothy McCarthy, her beloved son Lukas McCarthy, her brother Andrius Keturakis and his family, and many nieces and nephews. She was very loved, will be sorely missed and we wish she could have stayed with us for much longer.
A wake will be held at Caspers Funeral home 187 Dorchester St, South Boston on Tuesday evening 5-8 pm April 30th and the funeral will be held at St Peter’s Lithuanian Parish, 75 Flaherty Way, South Boston at 11 Am, May 1st.
