Janice A. Brown, a cherished resident of Mattapan, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on April 14th, 2024 at Massachusetts General Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Having lived for 80 years, she had experienced so much and had a wealth of knowledge and wisdom to offer.
Born and raised in the vibrant neighborhood of the North End, Janice was proud of her Italian heritage and held her roots close to her heart throughout her life. She shared a special bond with her brother Anthony Cucinotta and sister Antonia Molenda, maintaining a close relationship with them until the end. Janice was predeceased by her lifelong love and stepfather to her 5 kids, William O. “Junior” Murphy whom all the kids in the family affectionately called Poppy.
Janice is survived by her daughters Donna, Debbie, and Tanya, as well as her son Virgil. Janice also held a special place in her heart for her daughter-in-law Michelle. She was predeceased by her son Calvin, a loss that caused a great void in her heart. She raised strong, independent children into adulthood and ensured that her legacy of strength was passed down to her grandchildren as well. As a grandmother, she brought immeasurable enrichment to her “grands and greats” as she called them. Her loving and nurturing spirit gave her the greatest joy. Her spirit could be fiery at times and Janice was a person of high integrity and strong moral values. She was known for her straightforwardness and honesty, and never ever hesitated to express her views and opinions, even if they were unpopular. Her main goal was to be helpful to those around her, and she believed that being honest and direct was the best way to achieve that. She was always willing to lend a listening ear and offer advice, and her insights were highly valued by her friends and family. Her frankness and sincerity earned her the respect and admiration of those who knew her. Janice also loved a good laugh, had a great sense of humor, enjoyed a good night out and loved to go to Bingo.
Janice also cherished her role as a grandmother, doting on her grandchildren: Vincent, April, Krystle, Gary, Alecc, Christopher, Candi, Kassandra, Joanne, Tiffany, Jordan, Khrisean, Virgil, Derrell, and Zah'ny. In addition, Janice was blessed with numerous great-grandchildren, including Váysa, Vincent Jr., Maiya, Tyliyah, King, Raysean, Delancey, De'sire, Gary Jr., Deh'mie, Aaliyah, Jordan, A’niya, Michael, Alecc Jr., Domenic, Eliana, CJ, Halo, Katherine, Avery Jr., Ri'nai, Serenity, Jordan Jr., Journee, and Khrisean Jr. Janice was also blessed with two great-great-grandchildren, A'Nora and Armani. She took great pride in their accomplishments and cherished every moment spent with them all.
In addition to her family, Janice was known for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering faith. Janice opened her door to everyone, even the mailman, embodying a spirit of inclusivity and hospitality that endeared her to all. She touched the lives of all who knew her with her warmth and compassion. Janice's legacy of love and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, extended family and neighbors, pretty much, all who were fortunate enough to cross her path.
Though she may be gone from our sight, Janice's spirit will continue to shine bright in the memories we hold dear. May she rest in peace, knowing she was dearly loved and will never be forgotten.
