Hans J. Schmidt Sr (88) North Grafton Massachusetts

Hans J. Schmidt Sr. born on May 13, 1935, in Berlin Germany passed away April 20, 2024 (88) with his loving family by his side.

Hans was born in Berlin Germany and came to this country on October 25, 1953 at the age of 18. He arrived in Boston through an immigration sponsorship. In 1954, Hans joined the US Army’s, 3rd Armored Division until his honorable discharge in1963 as a Specialist, Second Class. While in the Military, Hans worked as a senior welder for his Battalion’s Maintenance Platoon. While in service, he received a letter of appreciation from the President of the International Men’s Soccer Club for his participation in the German-American soccer match for the International Club trophy. He was also awarded the Good Conduct Medal for exemplary behavior, efficiency, and fidelity.
In 1958, Hans met his wife (Lucy DiReda-Schmidt) of 63 years. They were married at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Worcester, Ma. on June 4, 1960. Together they raised 4 children, son Angelo (Predeceased) - spouse Susan, daughter Erika (Schmidt) Creamer - spouse Mark, daughter Sharon (Schmidt) Doyle - spouse Kevin and Hans Jr.- spouse Melissa. Hans was also predeceased by his brother, Klaus Schmidt.

Hans had a life- long career as a sheet metal engineer and was a dedicated employee at Arduini and Consolidated Manufacturers. In his younger days, he enjoyed bowling and was on a bowling team in Auburn, Ma. for many years. He also enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, and could fix “anything” that was broken.

Hans enjoyed spending many years of his retirement in Florida, returning approximately 10 years ago. He said his family was his “legacy”. He wrote a memoir of his life and experiences. He had 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He loved spending time with them during family functions. He sat back and enjoyed every moment. Hans was a quiet and gentle man, but when he spoke, you listened. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
He is now reunited with his son and brother.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, April 26, 2024 from 5-8 p.m. In Nordgren Memorial Chapel 300 Lincoln St. Worcester, MA 01605. A memorial service will follow at 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
