Obituary

McCarthy, Thomas D. "Tom", a lifelong resident of South Boston, passed away on April 7th at the age of 89, surrounded by loved ones. Tom was a beloved son of the late Lillian & Carl McCarthy, also of South Boston. He shared a warm, humorous, and loving relationship with his late sisters, Ruth E. and Lillian (Shionis), as well as his dear late brother, Carl "Teddy."

Uncle Tommy shared many fabulous and loving memories with Kathleen Shionis & Kurt Braun of Weymouth, Mary (Shionis) & Steven Donnelly, along with Kenny, Lilly and Charlie of Stoughton, Ruth (Shionis) & Michael Freeman, along with their children Rachel, Sam and Emily of Sharon, Theodore & Antonia Shionis and their son Edwin of Weymouth, the late Lillian Shionis and daughters Keryn and Kiley of Quincy and the late Christopher Shionis. Uncle had long and endearing friendships with Sally Wong and her daughters Imani and Farrah.

We all mourn his passing together and with deep sorrow for the long days ahead without his humor, intelligence and presence; we are all sure to carry dear Uncle with us in our hearts for the rest of our lives, cherishing every memory.

Thomas was an accomplished and humble man who served his country as a meteorologist with the United States Navy aboard the USS Tarawa, a graduate Northeastern University and Suffolk Law School he spent many years working as an attorney at John Hancock. Uncle was a chess master, music aficionado supreme and a man who loved to hate the Red Sox. Tom was always eager to share thoughts on politics, quantum physics and the weather. He enjoyed indulging in more chocolate than one would think possible as well as a good steak at the Capital Grill. Broadway Street will never be the same in absence of his cheerful walk to the Lincoln Tavern.

Certainly, we will all forever miss Uncle's intelligent conversation, sharp wit and we suspect the music in Symphony Hall may linger longer and with a hint of melancholy in search of his eager heart and appreciative ear.

God bless this great and kind man; may he forever rest in peace and rejoice in the arms of his beloved family in heaven.
