Kenneth W. Costa 82, of Westport, Ma. passed away on April 5, 2024, at home after a battle with Parkinson’s Disease and Dementia, he was surrounded by his loving family.
Ken was born on July 1, 1941 to Florence and Americo Perry in New Bedford, MA. He grew up in New Bedford and graduated from New Bedford High School in 1959. After high school Ken joined the United States Marine Corp and served 3 years active duty and 3 years inactive. After the Marines Ken went on to study Electrical Engineering at Southeastern Massachusetts University (SMU).
Ken worked for 35 years at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport as an Electronics Technician and retired in 1997.
He and his wife of 56 years, Magdalen Nogueira Costa lived in Westport, MA, and Little Compton, RI where they raised their 2 sons, before retiring to Hillsville, VA.
Ken was an avid bike rider and runner who was often seen running or biking all year long. He was famously known for the icicles that would form on his mustache while running in the winter months. Ken ran countless road races and biked in countless century rides. But his proudest moment was completing the 100th anniversary of the Boston Marathon.
When Ken wasn’t running his other hobbies were restoring and collecting antique cars in which he had 9 at the time of his illness. Ken was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan and loved to listen to the Boston Red Sox on the radio.
Ken is survived by his wife of 56 years Magdalen Nogueira Costa of Westport, MA, His 2 sons, Kenneth W. Costa Jr. and wife Annie of Westport, MA and Jeffrey D. Costa and wife Danielle of Middletown, RI. His 4 grandchildren, Matthew and Molly Costa of Westport, MA and Grayson and Cameron Costa of Middletown, RI, his sister Sandra Moniz of New Bedford, MA and brother David Costa and wife Catherine of Acushnet, MA, along with nieces and nephews.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial to which relatives and friends are invited will be Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at St. John the Baptist Church Westport at 11:00 A.M.
Memorial visitation will be Monday, April 22, 2024 at the Potter Funeral Home from 4-7 P.M
Interment will be in Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport.
